Do you love Thai food but find your own attempts at it fall short? Ever wondered how in the world to cook vegetables you’ve never seen before? Or maybe you just aren’t confident of how to create simple, healthy meals for the family. Whether the kitchen and the art of food completely mystifies you or you’re an experienced cook who wants new recipes, the Marquette Food Co-op’s cooking classes will meet your needs.
Using Marquette Food Co-op owners, staff, and some of the most talented cooks and chefs of our area, we offer a range of cooking classes that vary year to year. In classes you can learn new techniques, authentic international recipes, or ideas on how to prepare locally-produced foods.
Cooking classes are held at Marquette Senior High School. Cost is $10 for owners, $20 for all others. Pre-registration is required by contacting Marquette Schools at 906-225-4210. Classes fill up fast; register as soon as possible.
Educational activities extend well beyond our cooking classes, as we offer workshops on any nearly any topic relating to food and sustainability. Like our cooking classes, topics change year to year, to meet requests from the community and take advantage of the knowledge available through people in our community. Through classes and handouts, folks have learned how to raise bees for honey, tap maple syrup, make soap, home-brew beer, and much more. We also provide information on the latest food issues of the day, exemplified by our recent workshop on genetically-modified food.
Workshop locations are based on class needs and accessibility to the community. They’ve been held in the Co-op conference room, the Marquette Arts & Culture Center (below Peter White Library), and the Negaunee Senior Center. We also host agriculture and food-related classes at the Marquette Farmers & Artists market in May through fall. These classes are free to Co-op owners and others, but a $3 donation is suggested to help cover costs. Contact Sarah at 906-225-0671 ext.23 for more information.
Every other month, the Co-op hosts free movie screenings for the public in our conference room, providing light snacks and discussion afterward. Movies shown have included Food Inc., the recent indictment of the conventional food system; Flow, which unveiled the emerging problems of privatized water; as well as light-hearted fare, such as No Impact Man and Food Fight. Screenings are free, and are help in the Co-op conference room. For information contact Cuyler at 906-225-0671 ext.21.
The Marquette Food Co-op also offers several monthly classes. The ever popular Getting to Know Your Co-op classes are offered every 2nd Monday and 3rd Thursday, at 6pm in our upstairs conference room. Anyone, owner or not, is encouraged to attend this free one-hour class. An overview of the Co-op, free snacks, a comprehensive store tour, and time for questions are all part of it. Pre-registration is required. Sign up in the store at the customer service counter, or call Chris at 906-225-0671 ext.24.
Our other monthly class, Living Allergen-Free, is held the 1st Monday at 6pm. It gives participants a chance to learn about allergen-free resources and products from both the Co-op and from other attendees. In addition to an overview of what it means to have allergies to gluten, dairy, soy, and nuts, and a store tour tailored for those cooking around these allergens, there are also free snacks from many companies producing delicious allergen-free foods. Everyone is welcome to attend this free class – contact Abbey at 906-225-0671 ext.25 to register.
For more information on any of our classes and workshops, call Sarah at 906-225-0671 ext.23. You may also find information in our classes tri-fold available in the store, through the Marquette Community Schools community education brochure, and of course online.
We are also happy to tailor classes and presentations to your needs. If you have a group or an organization that would like us to come and speak about organics, local, food, and the environment, please contact Natasha at 906-225-0671 ext.11.
