After the passing of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, Disability Pride Month started as a way to celebrate both this civil rights milestone and the unique experience of those with disabilities.
Those with disabilities experience forms of prejudice and discrimination specific to their conditions, whether that be wheelchair accessibility, public transportation, and employment opportunities. The ADA prohibits these and other forms of discrimination.
The month serves as an opportunity to highlight the continued need for inclusion for those living with disabilities. It also brings attention to the insights and achievements of those persons.
