Local Food, Global Flavor: Winter Squash 2

October 26, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Winter squash is great for two reasons – it can be used in a huge variety of tasty ways, and it stores well, so you can eat locally all year round. At this class we’ll use multiple types of squash to make dishes from breakfast to dinner. Learn more about the varieties of squash available, how to store them, and how to use them in recipes from multiple continents.

Free to everyone • Preregistration is required.
This class is made possible thanks to a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

FAQs

What is a Specialty Crop Block Grant?

The purpose of the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) is to solely enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops. Specialty crops are defined as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, nursery crops (including floriculture).” Thus the grant can be used for research, programming, education, or other projects that support agriculture and agricultural sales outside of commodity crops.

The grant monies awarded to the Co-op will be used to create a series of cooking classes centered on the use of seasonal and local produce. One class series will be held for general audiences each month in the Co-op classroom. There will also be a series at the farmers market in the spring, summer, and fall of next year. Finally, a 6-week course will be offered in August to older children from the YMCA’s youth programming at Lake Superior Village.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

We love it when people bring kids to the classes! But we also want to know they’re coming so we can be ready. Children 10 and up should be registered through Eventbrite just like an adult. For any class, there is no need to register infants or toddlers, though a phone call would be appreciated so we can have some fun stuff for your little one ready. Some classes may not be appropriate for young children. Contact Sarah at 906-225-0671 ext. 723 if you want to give us a heads up, or simply have questions about the class content.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

smonte@marquettefood.coop or 906-225-0671 ext. 723

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Sure. But if you send someone in your place to the class, please have them bring your ticket.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, you do not have to bring your printed ticket to the event. If you can’t attend and want to give your ticket to someone else, it is nice for them to bring it to the event.

What is the cancellation policy?

We always prefer 24 hours’ notice for our classes so we can allow those on the wait list a chance to participate.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn’t match the attendee. Is that okay?

Yup. If you want to give your ticket to someone else, that’s fine with us.
