October is Co-op Month!

We are excited to celebrate Co-op Month this October. The national Co-op Month theme this year is “Cooperatives Build”.  Check out the letter from US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announcing October is Co-op Month!

Cruise by the new Co-op Corner to find out what’s new at the Co-op, try samples, talk with us about owner services, fill out your owner contact update form and more. The Co-op Corner will be staffed on Mondays from 3-5pm and Thursdays from 10am – Noon.

All samplings and activities take place in the Co-op Corner unless otherwise specified.

Monday

DocuMonday: In Defense of Food

Sponsored by the Marquette Food Co-op and the Friends of the Peter White Public Library

Michael Pollan, author of Food Rules and The Botany of Desire, searches for the answer to the question: What should I eat to be healthy? MFC Education Coordinator Sarah Monte will be on hand to introduce the film as well as offer some healthy snacks. The 2015 film runs for 117 minutes.

Living with Food Sensitivities/Allergies

This class helps participants learn which foods are suitable for their new way of eating, how to convert favorite recipes, which foods and products to avoid, and much more.

October 7th – 11am to 1pm

Friday

The Bearded Apple Coffee Samples

Join Glen from The Bearded Apple for a sample of their locally roasted coffee. Enjoy the sweet, complex flavors of their hand crafted coffee roasts and learn about their UP-based cooperative.

October 8th at the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market – 10:30am-1pm

Saturday

A Winter Squash and Leek cooking demonstration.  Learn various ways to use seasonal produce at the market and taste for yourself the difference that local makes!

October 10th – 3pm to 5pm

Monday

Cooperative Principle 6: Cooperation among Cooperatives

Co-ops around the world share a set of guiding principles, including “cooperation among cooperatives,” and “concern for community.” Visit the Co-op Corner to sample products from various companies that are either co-ops themselves or source ingredients from cooperatives.

Crafts in the Café

Creativity is for everyone! Come join the fun. This craft project starts with coloring and results in creating a personalized planter pot with plant included. Many thanks to Nancy’s Yogurt for providing us with the coloring mats and recycled yogurt containers.  Open to all ages.

Wednesday

“Food For Change” Film Screening

Food For Change is a documentary film focusing on food co-ops as a force for dynamic social and economic change in American culture. This is the first film to examine the important historical role played by food co-ops, their pioneering quest for organic foods, and their current efforts to create regional food systems. Matt Gougeon, the General Manager of the Marquette Food Co-op will start the evening off with a brief history of the MFC. We are proud to be one of many food co-ops who are screening this film during co-op month. The 84 minute film will be screened in the MFC Classroom.

Kombucha Sampling

Enjoy a sample of effervescent kombucha. This fermented tea drink naturally has a sour note.  It is often combined with fruit and roots which gives it a balanced flavor and texture. It’s high in probiotics!

Healthy on a Budget

Learn to eat well on a budget at this class that includes both a store tour and seasonal cooking demonstration. Visit the MFC events webpage to register for this free class.

Thursday

“100 Years of Cooperation” Film Screening

This documentary highlights the breadth of co-op stories both here in the U.S. and around the world. It follows the work of the National Cooperative Business Association, celebrating 100 years of cooperatives that build a better world, through 7 co-op stories. This 60 minute film was created for PBS in 2016. We are proud to be one of many co-ops who are screening this film during co-op month.

Winter Squash

Learn about the varieties of squash available, how to store them, and how to use them in recipes from multiple continents in this hands-on class. Please visit the MFC events webpage to register for this free class.

Introduction to Fermentation

WEEKLY EVENTS

 

SUNDAYS

Acoustic Brunch- 12pm – 2pm

Hear that? It’s brunch time! Enjoy our special Sunday brunch bar and delightful live music from local musicians in our Café.

MONDAYS – 6pm

Get To Know Your Co-op

Join us for a group tour of the MFC. We’ll meet at the Co-op Corner and start the tour in the MFC Classroom. As we delight in tasty samples, we’ll talk about the history of our Co-op and the cooperative business model. Our walk around the store will include highlights from each department. The tour will conclude with a Q & A session. The duration of the tour is about an hour. Each participant receives a $5 gift card to the Marquette Food Co-op.

TUESDAYS

Tea Tuesdays – 3pm to 5pm

Each Tuesday enjoy sampling teas with us. During the course of the month, we’ll explore the delicate, aromatic flavors of Oolong, Green and Black teas as well as herbal tea infusions.

WEDNESDAYS

Chair Massages- 11am to 1pm

Enjoy a relaxing complementary 15-minute massage from local masseuse Stacy Hohman of Fleur de Lis Therapeutic Massage.

 

Popcorn – 2pm

Pop on over to the Co-op Corner for a tasty treat: complimentary Michigan grown red popcorn! Bur Oaks Farm grows and prepares traditional, non-GMO popcorn. You can find their popcorn for sale in our bulk department.

THURSDAYS -4pm to 6pm

Sips ‘N’ Nibbles

Stop by the Co-op Corner for our beer/wine tastings now known as Sips ‘N’ Nibbles. Each week we will offer a selected beer or wine for sampling as well as a cheese hand-selected to pair with the drink.  Chat with our knowledgeable staff while you enjoy the complimentary tastes!

FRIDAYS- 1pm to 3pm

MFC Kitchen Samples

Each week at the kitchen counter, you will find a featured sample of our delicious house made MFC Kitchen deli specialties.

 

SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS

Weekend Giveaways

Every weekend in October you can enter for a chance to win our weekly giveaway basket. Look for the basket in the Co-op Corner and enter to win all day Saturday and Sunday.

FYI- Friday October 7th is Plaidurday!  Wear your plaid in to the Co-op to celebrate with us!
